Nigeria's most prestigious reality TV singing competition, Nigerian Idol,
is set to return for its eighth season, with the premiere scheduled for Sunday.
The organizers of the show, MultiChoice Nigeria and Africa Magic, unveiled the
new season at a media event in Lagos on March 28. The show will be aired in
phases until the live shows start on May 28, with the premiere episode
featuring clips from the auditions.
The Nigerian Idol auditions are known for showcasing impressive talents,
great music, and providing lots of laughter for viewers. Last season saw
Progress Chukwuyem emerge as the winner, and this season's judges, including
Simi, D’banj, Obi Asika, and IK Osakioduwa, are back to select another
incredible lineup of singers for the live show.
The competition is expected to be fiercer than the previous season, with
MultiChoice committed to bringing a season deserving of every vote cast. According
to Dr Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels at
MultiChoice, the quality of musical talents the fans will enjoy this season is
outstanding. The auditions will begin on April 23, and the live performances
will start on May 28, culminating in the grand finale airing on July 16.
The show will broadcast on all Africa Magic channels, including Showcase,
Urban, and Family. There will also be a Nigerian Idol pop-up channel (DStv ch.
199) where fans can watch all the auditions and “behind-the-stage”
conversations. Additionally, fans of the show can catch up on fun moments ahead
of the premiere on Sunday by attending the 'campus storms' currently ongoing in
Jos, Benin and Lagos.
Nigerian Idol is an empowering platform that showcases remarkable
Nigerian voices to a global audience. The competition has produced megastars
like Timi Dakolo, Mercy Chinwo, and Omawumi, and the next superstar is waiting
to be discovered. The organizers invite viewers to join them on this journey of
discovery and witness the rise of a new star.
