Jay Jay Okocha explains why he decided to obtain Turkish citizenship

Jay Jay Okocha, a Nigerian football legend, recently reflected on his time playing for

Fenerbahce, a Turkish club, where he spent two seasons from 1996 to 1998. During his time with the team, Okocha played an instrumental role in securing numerous victories and building a strong rapport with both his teammates and the fans.

In an interview with Hurriyet, Okocha expressed his deep appreciation for the Turkish people, who he claimed had treated him with great kindness and admiration. He explained that he received an offer for Turkish citizenship during his time with the club and accepted it without hesitation, as he had already developed a strong connection with the country and its people.

Despite not wanting to change his religion, Okocha also adopted a new name while in Turkey, inspired by the strong Muslim faith that many of the locals practiced. He explained that he chose the name Muhammed Yavuz after a member of the club's coaching staff, who had become a close friend and confidant during his time with the team.

According to Okocha, Yavuz was a kind and sympathetic person who always made him laugh and feel at home. As a result, Okocha decided to incorporate Yavuz's name into his own, adding it to his existing name to become Muhammed Yavuz.

Okocha's decision to adopt a new name and embrace Turkish citizenship highlights the deep level of respect and admiration he held for the country and its people. Despite eventually leaving Fenerbahce to join PSG and later Bolton, Okocha's time in Turkey left a lasting impression on him, and he continues to hold fond memories of his days with the club.
