Female Genital Mutilation is a violation of the fundamental right of females--- Temuru Oghenekome

Delta-born and bred Queen Temuru Oghenekome is the first runner up, Miss Peace Africa 2021. In this interview with Topflyers Magazine, the “top model” speaks about her triumph in the pageantry and the need to end female genital mutilation.

Excerpts:

Can you tell us about yourself?

My name is Temuru Oghenekome and I am 19 years old. I am the first runner up for Miss Peace Africa, 2021 and I am the Miss Peace Africa Tourism 2021. I am a student of Delta State Health Technology and I am from Delta-North.

How did you know about Miss Peace Africa pageantry?

I knew about it through a friend. She posted it on her Whatsapp status. The post drew my attention and desire for the contest so I decided to give it a try.

Did you know you would be among the winners of the pageantry from its onset?

I did not have it in mind that I would really win. I was just doing the best I could and I was actually elated when I was called out as the first runner up of the pageantry.

What did you enjoy most about the pageantry?

I enjoyed the car wash party and other activities.

What skill did you showcase?

I showcased my tweaking skill (smiles). I can tweak very well so when we were asked to display something skillful, I mesmerized the audience with my tweaking skill. Whenever I remember the tweak and how people gave an ovation for it, my heart is merry.

Interviewer: That is interesting. We hope to see you tweak soon perhaps in music videos of popular Nigerian artistes.

Interviewee: Thank you.

What do you think you did differently that made you standout and emerge as one of the winners of Miss Peace Africa 2021?

Actually, my answer might seem funny but let me still say it. My smiles and resilience stood me out. No matter the situation, I always smile. In fact there were times I had nobody to cheer me up because I came from Warri while the contest was held at Ekpoma. So I could not bring my fans along, nobody to applaud me but I always smile even when I feel like crying.

Interview intersects: So your smile saved you?

Like I said, the response seems funny but my smile rejuvenates hope. It is alluring; it gives life in the midst of despair.

Some people believe models are sexually loose and may need to be sexually intimate with certain people to win pageantries. What is your reaction to that?

I did not experience anything of such in this pageantry although this is my first pageantry contest. So, I don’t have anything to really say in response to whether the theory is true or false.

Did you do any pet project during the pageantry?

Yes, I spoke about female genital mutilation and circumcision. I addressed and sensitized people about the inherent problems of female mutilation and the need to put an end to it globally. Female Genital Mutilation is a violation of the fundamental right of females and should be stopped.

What do you think makes a good model?

Character and mentorship; a good model needs to be well mannered and must have a mentor.

What are your best meal and colour?

My best meal is Ogbono soup with fufu while my best colour is black and white.

(Interviewer laughs). Ok. What is one thing you can never do in life irrespective of the pressure on you?

I can never deny God.

In a game of truth and a lie, tell us something true about you and something not true then allow the audience to guess which is the truth and the lie.

I love dancing but I cannot dance.

Behind every successful man there is a woman and vice-versa. Is there a man behind your success in Miss Peace Africa Pageant?

Not really. I am single and everything I do, I do it by myself?

Are available for a relationship that can lead to marriage?

Currently, I am not available (laughs).

Interviewer: Why?

I don’t just want any stress from men because relationship is stressful. It is like a 6-credit unit course in the university that needs to be studied first before embarking on it.

How can people reach you?

You can reach me through Instagram via KomeAlbert24 and my Facebook name is also Kome Albert.

Who are the people you would like to give a shout out to?

I will like out to give a shout out to my mum, my friends, Elvis and Kola.
