Prof. Toyin Ogundipe |
Recall that that UNILAG Senate had filed an application on Monday
at the National Industrial Court to discontinue the suit and that the Wale
Babalakin-led Governing Council had on August 12, 2020, sacked Ogundipe.
The council had replaced him with Prof. Theophilus Soyombo who
later resigned his appointment.
Angered by Ogundipe’s removal, the senate had instituted a suit
against Wale Babalakin (SAN). Other defendants in the suit marked
NICN/LA/283/2020 were the Registrar, Mr Oladejo Azeez; Soyomo and Ogundipe.
The senate asked the court to declare that Ogundipe’s removal
was unprocedural, null and void. However, on Monday, the senate informed the
court that it was withdrawing the suit, NAN reports.
The withdrawal of the suit was following president Buhari’s decision to suspend Ogundipe and
Babalakin. Buhari also directed the senate of the university to convene
and nominate an acting vice-chancellor from among its members for the
confirmation by the university council.
Obeying the directive, the Senate on Monday elected Professor Folashade Ogunsola as the
new acting VC of the institution. Ogunsola, a Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Development Services) polled 135 votes compared to Prof. Ben Oghojafor’s 31
votes.
It was gathered one vote was declared void and a total of 167
Professors were at the Senate meeting.
