EOTM: I Started As A 10-Yr-Old Free Purse Sewer, But Today, I Am An Award-Winning Fashion Designer and Teacher in Dubai--- Joan Edward





 Welcome to Topflyers Entrepreneur Of The Month (January, 2020) corner. Our entrepreneur of the month is an award-winning international fashion designer, creative director and English and Literature graduate from the prestigious University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State. Though resident in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Joan Edward is Nigerian and creativity is her entrepreneurial nature. In this interview with TopFlyers magazine, she shares her experiences.

Can we meet you?

I am Joan Edward, also known as Queen Ede. I am a fashion designer, creative director and founder Of Land of Ede Limited.

What is “Land of Ede” about?

Land of Ede is a Nigerian fashion brand with a branch in Dubai Design District and Abu Dhabi, UAE.

How educated are you?  

Highly educated. I am an English and Literature graduate from the University of Benin.

Where do you hail from?

I am Nigerian, but I currently reside in Dubai, UAE.

How did you start as an entrepreneur?
                     
I Started in Benin City Edo State as a 10year old girl who was sewing free purses for her friends, until I registered my business in 2006 and won my first award as Niger Delta Designer of the year in 2011.

Currently, my company is registered both in Nigeria and the UAE. We do Fashion & Costume Designing, Creative Directing and Mentorship. As a costume designer and creative director, I currently work with media houses in the UAE and also teach Fashion Designing in the Dubai school of Luxury Fashion and Style.

You studied English and literature. One would expect you should be a writer, teacher, educationists, editor or something related to your course of study. Yet, you choose to be an entrepreneur. What inspired this choice?

Inspiration for my job comes mostly from my love for people and beautiful things. And I love my job a lot because it gives me freedom to mentally explore. I love to create ideas and just think beyond limits. My job gives me the pleasure of doing that.

Where do you hope to be in the next 5 years?

I hope to make greater impartations in the fashion and media industries in Africa, the Middle East and beyond.

Our heart for our clients and love for fresh fashion inventions.

What message do you have for your customers?

You are the reason we do all that we do.

How do you relax?

I do a lot of relaxation. I love to pamper myself. I spend a lot of time at home with family. I also go on vacations a lot. Shopping is also a great way for me to unwind.

What is your favorite meal and colour?

I have no favorite meal and color. It depends on my mood.

Tell us one thing you cannot do to survive this life?

I cannot curse God to survive.
